Melatonin

Melatonin is a hormone that regulates our sleep cycles. It’s produced by the pineal gland which is located in the center of the brain; our eyes tell the pineal gland when it’s daytime, and when it’s night time. During the night, spurts of melatonin are released, encouraging us to sleep.

One theory is that in addition to regulating our sleep cycles, the pineal gland controls aging and the rhythms of our lives. To test this theory, Walter Pierpaoli, MD, PhD did an experiment; he transplanted the pineal glands of old mice into those of young mice, causing them to age faster. Done in reverse, older mice were rejuvenated. As a result of this experiment, he learned that supplementing the mice’s diet with melatonin extended their lives by up to 25%.

For obvious reasons, we cannot replicate these tests on humans; however, large doses have been given to breast cancer patients without any significant side effects.

It has already been proven that our Melatonin production decreases as they we age. By age 60, many people’s production rates have been reduced by more than 50%.

Because Melatonin is a strong antioxidant and cancer fighter, we recommend that patients take Melatonin on a regular basis starting around age 50. Even solid tumors have partially regressed with Melatonin treatment.
