Metabolic processes are stimulated and maintained by thyroid hormones such as TSH, T3 and T4. These hormones work by modulating the synthesis & degradation of proteins and fatty acids in different tissues. As one of the biggest successes of modern clinical medicine, thyroid hormone replacement therapy simply replaces lost hormones in anyone exhibiting symptoms such as fatigue, thickened skin, constipation, decreased reflexes and weight gain and low thyroid hormone levels.
One of the most common causes of low thyroid levels is an autoimmune disorder called Hashimoto’s disease. With this condition, the immune system attacks the thyroid gland so it’s unable to produce adequate levels of thyroid hormones. This disorder is very common. In fact, someone you know probably has it. The likelihood of contracting Hashimoto’s disease increases with age, but age isn’t really a factor because it can happen at any age. It’s estimated that approximately 10% of adults over the age of 65 have Hashimoto’s disease.
Because of how common the disease is, we check thyroid hormone levels in all of our patients and treat if necessary. These tests will be used to tailor the treatment to meet each person’s individual needs. We will provide a combination of T3 & T4 to combat the low hormone levels.
